Essential item list for your safari and trekking.
When packing clothing, focus on comfortable, lightweight, and breathable fabrics. Opt for neutral colors such as khaki, tan, olive green, and brown. Avoid bright colors (especially white and yellow) which attract unwanted attention from wildlife and show dust easily.
Crucially, avoid dark blue and black colors in areas with tsetse flies (like Tarangire or Serengeti woodlands), as these insects are attracted to dark colors and can deliver painful bites. Camouflage patterns are illegal for civilians in Tanzania; please do not pack them.
Temperatures can fluctuate significantly. Early morning game drives can be chilly (around 10°C / 50°F), while afternoons get very warm. Dress in layers so you can adjust as the day heats up. Bring a fleece jacket, windbreaker, or lightweight sweater.
For footwear, a pair of broken-in, comfortable walking shoes or light trail runners is perfect for game drives and short bush walks. Pack sandals or slip-on shoes for relaxing at the lodge or camp in the evening.
A wide-brimmed sun hat is essential to protect your face and neck from the African sun. Good quality sunglasses with UV protection and high SPF sunscreen are mandatory. Bring binoculars (ideally 8x42 or 10x42) to spot far-off birds and cats, and a camera with a good optical zoom lens.
